TikTok Content Creators Fueling Parallel Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

A shadow economy for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Via Social Media

Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Viewers are encouraged to message these profiles privately for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, administration instructions and claims of next-day UK delivery. Vendors promote the substance there before directing customers to other platforms for transactions.

Understanding Retatrutide

This medication is an experimental injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Experts Express Concerns

However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to users injecting products of uncertain source.

Some professionals stated the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the rising price of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Enforcement

Selling the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be promoted or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers try to circumvent the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or prison.

Service Reaction and Content Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down violative material and prohibited associated keywords and search suggestions. The organization said it was committed to maintaining the platform safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Activities

Research also found groups with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which operates like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of users, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing reviews and detailed instructions for preparing or injecting at residence.

After moments of joining one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Details and Pricing

Inside these groups, messages display black plastic packages with postal service stickers, stating to include fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how much time a injector should be used, sellers give contradictory answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Security Actions

A representative for the messaging service stated it actively monitored harmful material on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“People are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not include what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service connected the surge in demand to recent price rises for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to social media. But counterfeit injections are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her staff has previously encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet approved … may expose users to potentially significant medical dangers”.
