No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
